Following Present Experience 2017

petals-and-moss

March to June 2017

This is one of a series of modules in our New Training Format for 2017. Each module is 4 weekends in length and focuses on a particular aspect of Hakomi. For more details, see: https://mindfulselfdiscovery.com/training/new-training-format/

One of the components of Hakomi that contributes to its uniqueness and efficacy is the focus on following present experience:  in ourselves, and in another.  This series of 4 weekends provides the opportunity for participants to slow down and observe our own reactions as they arise, and to read non-verbal signals in another which indicate a change in their present experience.

Ninety percent of emotional communication is nonverbal.

-Daniel Goleman, Emotional Intelligence

Willhelm Reich wisely said, “You don’t have to take a patient’s history. It walks in the room with him.”  Our personal history is present in the way we walk and the way we carry our bodies, in the flavour of our gestures and our patterns of speech, in the way we interact with others and with ourselves. For the most part all of this is habitual; done without conscious thought. You could say it is “automatic”.

By following present experience, the nonverbal rather than the narrative, we can begin to get clues about the deeply held beliefs and ideas that shape our very experience of the world.

Through experiential practices, we will cultivate and embody a warm, welcoming, non-judgemental state of mind. Resting in this open-hearted way of being, we look with simple curiosity, and to learn to “track” non-verbal signals in others. Research shows that practicing this type of empathy enhances our perceptual capacities. Learn to use all of this in support of emotional healing in yourself and in others. This is the Hakomi way.

You may be interested in using Hakomi in your work with clients, or to use it to enhance your personal relationships. Either way, this module will assist you to cultivate and deepen an interactive practice of personal development that will bring you a sense of emotional nourishment, offering the possibility of more satisfaction and connection with others.
