Biography

Marcia Burton

Marcia Burton is a Certified Hakomi Practitioner and Senior Trainer, and a Certified Teacher and Practicum Trainer in Mindful Self-Compassion. Marcia trained with, and continued to work closely with Ron Kurtz, creator of the Hakomi method until his death in 2011. She has taught Hakomi in England, Ireland, Spain, USA and Canada. Marcia has an MA in Counselling  and Psychotherapy. Since 2000, she has used Hakomi to support individuals and families experiencing the effects of bereavement, trauma, stress-related illness, cancer, and challenges in relationship. She has worked for Island Health Authority as a counsellor for those experiencing mental health and substance use issues, and continues to support patients experiencing a mental health crisis at the local hospital on Salt Spring Island.  Marcia is a Registered Clinical Counsellor with the BCACC.

Marcia has been a committed student of mindfulness and compassion for several decades, and is so grateful for the many teachers she has had the privilege to work with over the years. She considers her students to be some of her finest teachers! “One of the many things I love about my work is that it provides a framework for me to extend mindfulness and compassion into my daily life, and all of my relationships. My practice reminds me to be inspired by life, and to trust the wisdom in ourselves as humans. I see all human beings as part of nature, wild beings, blessed with an innate inclination towards healing.”

Marcia is a Certified Teacher of Mindful Self-Compassion (MSC) and has been offering 8 week courses and intensive trainings in MSC on Salt Spring Island, and beyond, since 2016.   MSC is an evidence-based model, developed by Christopher Germer and Kristin Neff.   MSC offers a beautiful set of practices to enhance one’s connection to self, to encourage motivation through kindness not criticism, and generally to shift our attention towards being nourished by life, and away from being hard on ourselves.

Marcia brings a combination of gentleness, compassion, humour and playfulness to her work. She lives on Salt Spring Island, with her husband, Bob Milone. She enjoys kayaking, gardening, and walking with their dog on the beach.

“Bob and Marcia are two of the most amazing Hakomi practitioners and trainers in the world. They totally embody the work individually and as a couple.  I highly recommend any Hakomi workshop or training they are offering to anyone wanting to experience the essence and spirit of Hakomi as well as the practical application of the method.”

–Donna Martin, Ron Kurtz’s most Senior Trainer and Legacy Holder

With great gratitude

Marcia has been teaching Hakomi with Bob Milone, one of Ron Kurtz’s Legacy Holders, since 2006. In 2019, Bob decided to step further into retirement, and will no longer be teaching full Hakomi trainings with Marcia. However, he will continue to teach occasional workshops with Marcia on Salt Spring Island. Marcia is so grateful to Bob for his generosity and mentorship over the years. She appreciates his patience, warmth and kindness, as well as his skill and expertise as a teacher, and as a human being.
